Who are Heero and Zechs?

Heero Yuy and Zechs Merquise are two main characters from the hit anime series Gundam Wing. Both are mobile suit pilots; Heero in the Wing Gundam for the colonies and Zechs in various Oz suits.

~ SPOILER ALERT! ~

In the year A.C. 195, the colonies and the Earth Sphere Alliance are embroiled in a conflict that has lasted many years. Rebels in the colonies have been secretly planning to send a small specialized unit of Gundams to fight off the oppression of the Earth, especially the organization known as Oz.

Heero is one of five Gundam pilots to be sent to Earth. Zechs, a highly-trained and elite officer of Oz, just happens to be around as Heero descends onto Earth. Of course, a battle ensues, in which Zech cleverly manuevers to plunge Heero's Gundam into the sea.

But, that is not the last they will see of each other...

It becomes known that Zechs is really Milliardo Peacecraft, prince of the pacifist Cinq kingdom. Years ago, Cinq was attacked by shady Alliance forces and the entire royal family killed, except for Milliardo and his younger sister, Relena.

Relena was adopted by the Darlians and raised with no knowledge of her royal birth until her adoptive father's tragic death. It was around this time that she met the mysterious Heero... And a chain of events that would affect all their destinies was put in motion...

Throughout the series, Heero and Zechs meet as enemies and sometimes grudging compatriots. More often than not they engage in battle with each other, with varying results. At the very end of the series, they are once again on opposite sides; Zechs trying to destroy the Earth, Heero trying to save it and all that it represents.

After many exchanged blows and philosophies, Heero emerges the victor, disarming Zechs but not killing him. Zechs asks him why he didn't finish him; Heero replies "Because Relena would be sad..." (^_^)

It is Zechs who pays the ultimate price later, sacrificing himself to destroy the remaining reactor of Libra, in Heero's place. "'Til we meet again..." he says, disappearing in a devastating explosion...

However, as all who've seen the Endless Waltz movie know, Zechs obviously survived, and became a Preventer, helping to save Earth from Mariemaia's forces. Heero, naturally, fights in his Gundam. They don't meet face to face again, but they know they're both fighting for the same thing...Peace.

In the end, they both go their separate ways. Never to be seen again...?

Why make a rivalry fanlisting?

I can personally say that it was spectacular watching both of these brave, talented warriors go up against each other in battle. The fact that they both look good doesn't hurt either... XP

You can definitely feel a sense of rivalry between them, and not just because they fight on opposite sides. Both are well-trained fighters, the best of the best, and have great dedication to what they do. Zechs is trying to avenge his family and overcome his own shame at joining the enemy; Heero fights to complete his missions, and maybe find purpose and meaning in his life.

They each recognize that the other is a worthy opponent and fight ot their limits to see who is the better warrior and who, ultimately, will win.

We've only ever seen them fight against one another in mobile suits. One must wonder who would win in hand-to-hand combat...?

I find it highly entertaining to watch these two males duke it out. Their rivalry is based upon mutual respect and maybe animosity. Add a related female into the mix (Relena) and the outcome is bound to be interesting.

So, who's the best? Heero or Zechs? ^_^
