What is Gundam Wing?

If you haven't heard by now, Gundam Wing is a wildly popular anime series, one in the long line of Gundam shows. To make a long story short & not spoil it for anyone...

Five young men fly down from the colonies, each a highly skilled pilot of a Gundam, a special mobile suit. Sent by rebel leaders to fight against the oppression of the Earth Federation, these pilots risk their lives in every battle, all in the name of peace...

Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, & Chang Wufei. Over the course of the show these five young men meet again and again; sometimes allies, sometimes foes. Making powerful friends along the way, they risk all for the final confrontation that will determine the future of the universe.

Why Episode 49: The Final Victor?

For me, the final episode was the shining point of the entire show. So much drama, revelation, and enough action to make your eyes pop! XD

Those who've seen it know what I mean...

WARNING: major spoilers ahead!

Zechs and Heero finally duke it out in what will obviously be their final battle...

Through all the pandemonium of Peacemillion crashing into Libra from the last episode, somehow the giant battle station starts up again and continues it's deadly path towards Earth.

Sally, Relena, Howard, and the rest of the Peacemillion crew arrive on the MO-II resource satellite, where Lady Une is ordering the Earth troops to destroy all mobile dolls in the name of Treize. Sally makes a comment about how Treize's ultimate goal was for peace as well.

Duo cloaks the Gundam scientists with Deathscythe Hell and brings them to the Libra reactor area, where they hope to stop Libra's movements towards Earth. Duo makes some flippant comment, as usual. ^_^

Back on MO-II, Lady Une hands a gun to Relena, saying she should take revenge for her father's murder. Relena puts her hand over the gun but pushes it aside, saying they should end the cycle of revenge and violence, for peace. Lady Une looks awed for a moment and agrees. Howard goes up to the control panels and says they have to stop Libra from dropping to earth, since it will cause massive deaths and global climate changes, etc...

Switching views to Libra, Trowa cuts wires to a control panel, destroying the ZERO system. Quatre is resting against a console, clutching his side, having been injured earlier by Dorothy's sword. Dorothy and Trowa talk about finding home and belonging. Trowa makes a comment about "a woman who can't cry, how sad". After that, Trowa supports Quatre and starts to exit, but not before Quatre says something about helping Dorothy. Trowa remarks "she'll be okay...she's strong" (?) and the two leave. Dorothy hides her face in her hands and cries...

The remaining Gundam pilots, Duo, Quatre and Trowa, leave the Libra scene. Along the way (to wherever) Duo says they'll celebrate with champagne after the battle. Quatre grins weakly and says the ever-famous "it'll have to be non-alcoholic". ^_^

Back on MO-II, Lady Une contacts Noin and asks her to transmit video for the battle bewteen Zechs and Heero to them. The video is then sent to all transmission channels on Earth. While the shocked/fearful people of Earth watch, Lady Une voices over about how war will never beget anything and urges people to strive for peace.

Meanwhile, back on Libra, the five Gundam scientists have rigged the reactors to blow. But, before they can detonate it, Quinze shows up with a gun in hand, shooting Dr. J. Quinze says that if they hadn't changed the orders to the Gundam pilots, the real Operation Meteor would have already happened and they would control Earth. Making some retort, Professor G presses the button to detonate the reactor and Quinze fires at him...BIG explosion view from outside.

Zechs and Heero are still going at it, both Gundams blasting away at each other, and both pilots voicing their take on war. Lots of testosterone and philosophy flying around here folks! ;-P

So, Libra isn't falling down to Earth, but everyone notices a big chunk of it broke of an still is. During all the hullabaloo, the space colonies' leaders *finally* get it and denounce White Fang as representatives of the colonies' wishes. They want to work together with the Alliance to attain peace...Yeah! XP

The Gundam pilots decide to attack the falling Libra chunk, hoping to disintegrate it enough before it gets to Earth. They fly into it, Zechs follows to try to stop them and Heero follows to fight Zechs.

I swear, the battle between Heero and Zechs here is amazing! More intense then any they've had yet. But, of course, one has to lose...and that is Zechs. With a final beam saber cut, Heero takes off Epyon's arm, rendering Zechs weaponless. When Zechs asks why he didn't finish him off, Heero replies "Because Relena would be sad". (AW...^o^)

Zechs hangs his head and is quiet after that... Quatre contacts Heero about destroying the energy core and he agrees to do so. Awesome Heero, so awesome... @-@

Heero reaches the energy core but doesn't have any ammo left to blow it up. So, being him, he decides to self-destruct. With his hand on the self-destruct button, Heero is about to go through with it... Then, Zechs comes out of nowhere, tossing Heero aside and plunging his beam saber into the reactor core. Heero tries to stop him, but Zechs says the world needs a heart like his. "'Til we meet again..." Giant explosion, Zechs disappears. (T-T) Heero is left standing there...thinking...

You'd think the falling chunk would be history by now, but a part of it still wants to fall to Earth. The Gundam pilots are told to evacuate, it's getting dangerous; there's nothing they can do... But, surprise! Wufei flies in with Heero's buster rifle, telling him he knows what to do. Heero accepts the mission - flying out to blow up the falling debris. The others exit as well.

The falling chunk starts to enter the atmosphere, Wing Zero right in front of it. Everyone says that they trust in Heero and know he can succeed. Heero blasts away at the chunk, taking some heavy hits to his already damaged Gundam, but he's no quitter! With a strong will to survive, he blasts that debris to pieces, the particles raining down onto Earth like little falling stars.

Everyone cheers like crazy; the war is won! The Gundam pilots express admiration of Heero, Quatre saying "He is the heart of outer space". (?) Relena is obviously relieved. Heero flies out of the explosion field, Wing Zero in bird-mode, smiling a little. "Mission Complete."

Fast forward a bit, Earth is all hunky-dory, formed the Earth Sphere Unified Nation with the colonies, etc. Peace has finally come true.

We see Noin approaching Dorothy as she visits a cemetery. It is apparantly the site of Zechs and Treize's graves. Dorothy says it will be the last time she visits and asks Noin why she never leaves flowers on Zechs' grave. Noin explains that she doesn't believe he's dead, that she thinks he's still out there somewhere. (*hint*) XP

Finally, we see Relena leaving a colony, to attend a meeting about Mars' terraforming project apparently. She's stopped by a diplomat, they talk, and he wishes her "Happy Birthday", though he wonders why she's working then.

Relena gets onto her shuttle, passing a worker along the aisle. She apologizes and goes to her seat. But, she finds a teddy bear and card waiting there. She picks it up and reads it, looks surprised and dashes to the window.

Sure enough, the worker was Heero and he's walking away outside. Relena calls to him and he turns towards her. She smiles and calmly tears up the card, saying he should deliver it personally next time. Heero turns and continues to walk away (a small smile on his face?). Relena watches him go, smiling to herself...

~~~ I couldn't believe it was over! XD This episode was so cool! Almost everything else in the series was leading up to this final episode and it didn't disappoint (though Ep.48 could have had the Heero/Relena helmet encounter go a bit further...but that's another story! ^o^) Overall, this was one of my all-time favorite episodes. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it (or the series) to watch it! ^_^
