Who are Dorothy & Quatre?
Dorothy Catalonia & Quatre Raberba Winner are two characters from the hit anime series Gundam Wing. Quatre is one of the central characters and the pilot of Gundam 04, Sandrock. Dorothy, also an important character in the series, is the granddaughter of Duke Dermail.
~ SPOILER ALERT! ~
Dorothy is introduced into the series as a student at the Sanc Kingdom academy that Relena established. It is later revealed that she was sent as a spy for Romefeller and tries to incite various conflicts while she is there.
Though Quatre also attended the school, along with Heero, he and Dorothy were never shown making direct contact. (They must have though, because they recognized each other in the later episodes.)
The significant contacts between the two are later in the series, when the final battle breaks out.
Quatre is planning strategy for the Gundam pilots and Dorothy is manipulating the mobile dolls on Libra. At one point, when the pilots successfully execute Quatre's attacks, Dorothy wonders who could direct such actions, and Quatre does the same. They make a cosmic connection and correctly guess that the other is directing the opposite force. (Makes sense, yes?)
Later, Quatre boards Libra to look for the mobile doll controls, and he finds them...and Dorothy. Dorothy greets him with a smile and a gun in his face. She shoots but misses on purpose, saying she'd rather duel him for control of the mobile dolls.
So, they duel, each arguing for or against war, until it is revealed that Dorothy fights for the same reasons as Treize. Making war for peace. Quatre falters and (*gasp*) Dorothy runs him through with her sword. (Ouch!) Before losing consciousness, Qautre tells her "you're kinder that me", in that she has also known the sadness and loss of war, and that she feels other people should be saved from it. (That's what I'm guessing, at least.)
Dorothy appears unmoved by this, deep in thought...but is shaken when she learns of Treize's death.
Sometime after that, Trowa appears and tends to Quatre. While he destroys the mobile dolls unit, he talks to Dorothy about fighting and returning home. (?) Dorothy replies that she has no home, looking very depressed. Trowa comments "a woman who can't cry, how sad". As he helps Quatre stand and start to leave, Quatre pleads for him to help Dorothy as well. Trowa tells him "she'll be okay...she's strong". (?) As they leave, Dorothy hides her face in her hands and cries...
This is the last and only time we really see Dorothy & Quatre interact.
(Dorothy also makes an appearance in the Endless Waltz Special Edition movie, but very briefly, and does not meet up with any of the other main characters.)
Why make a fanlisting?
Well, despite the obvious lack of interaction, I believe that Dorothy & Quatre could, at the very least, become friends. (If you get over the whole 'stabbed-him-with-a- sword' thing...)
They have similar histories and backgrounds; they are from upper-class/well-to-do families and have lost a father/family relative because of war.
Both of them are, on a certain level, empathetic (i.e. they can truly understand what others feel).
They understand that the other also ultimately fights for peace, just with different methods.
Naturally, because of their strikingly different personalities, there would be conflict between them. But, hey, that's what arguing is for, and they would have some very heated debates.
Considering all this, they would, theoretically, be good friends.
What about a romantic relationship?
Taking the above statements into account, I also believe that Dorothy and Quatre could have a romantic relationship.
Many people in Gundam Wing fandom believe Quatre and Dorothy would be a good couple (4xD), for various reasons and circumstances... I think so too, but it would take a lot of work.
The most obvious hinderance would be the interaction; they certainly didn't have much in the series. And the different personalities. But the 'connection' and 'duel' establish a kind of "feeling" about the two that makes a future romantic relationship possible.
It would be hard to describe, if you haven't watched those scenes, or closed-off your mind to the endless possibilities of love, but there is a certain spark between them...
"Opposites attract" is certainly cliché, but it works in this case... {^_^}
